Layer-By-Layer Quantification of the Remodeling of the Human Fovea In Neurodegenerative Disease: A Dignaostic and Research Tool

Parkinson’s disease, as well as other neurodegenerative disorders, affects the visual system of the brain, including the eye. While researchers have clearly documented changes to the retina which are diagnostic or characteristic of Parkinson’s disease, this work in itself has not previously yielded a distillation of the changes to be measured in tracking the disease. This technology provides specific methods (related to parts of the retina, especially the fovea) to generate specific parameters that correlate with disease. These measurements are performed by the ophthlamological tool known as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). The specific methods which comprise this diagnostic opportunity will allow for reproducible and consistent criteria for disease monitoring across different specific OCT platforms and practitioners.
