Method for Forming a Ceramic Aerogel
This technology is a scalable roll-to-roll (R2R) additive manufacturing of silica-carbon composite aerogel for building insulation materials that could exceed existing silica aerogel’s R-value at near standard temperature and pressure conditions and ~90% reduction of the unit price . The new composite is made of silica aerogel and carbon. The elemental carbon minimizes the radiative component of thermal conductivity, increases the mechanical strength of the aerogel, and makes the hydrophilic silica aerogel hydrophobic for higher moisture and fire resistance.
